The Neumann U47 is an exraordinary quality microphone.
I played one in a situdio recording. The dynamic range and characteristic is unbelieveble.

I do agree, although I'd say that it depends on where you're using it exactly. Recently recorded various brass and both EV RE-20 and U47 FET gave me good results, sometimes even as an uneven stereo pair. Always nice to have a choice in mixing. Besides that neither of them would have survived on a standard converter, but a Lavry AD11 did the trick well. @
