Turnitin is often used in Education. Had it working on Moodle server years ago.

@Hans That thread is quite interesting. #Turnitin seem absolutely resistant to fact or advice. That stuff should be thrown out the window.

It is often demanded in higher education to be honest. Even the Business Schools in the Netherlands are using it.

@Hans How does an appeal procedure to their verdict work? o popl hav a say at all? From the report discussion i shared i get a feeling, that appeals aren't possible, really, simply because the humans involved into his refuse to grant that to a prson appaling. Sounds like #digital #fascism to me.

At the time I worked with it students that got reported talked to the institute they studied and would be able to provide more sources to prove it was their own work. Do keep in mind that in those days it was more about using research findings that did not belong to the students. Chat GPT was not even alive.

@Hans I get it, it was used to detect plagiarisms. That makes sense. And yes, today is a whole different story. #academics, technologically #naive?

I read an article about how current AI detection has a high rate of false positives, especially if you quote a lot of historical documents that are written. For example, one AI detector flagged the U.S. Constitution as being written by AI.

If the student can prove that they wrote it, and their system falsely flagged it as AI, and someone like a school or employer took adverse action, they might have a case for slander/libel.
