Not a lot of responses to my question about the best non-Mastodon ActivityPub platforms.

To elaborate a bit, I'm specifically interested in information about the best-designed alternatives to Mastodon.

Mastodon, being Twitter-like, was always rather clunky, but I'm not getting good vibes from the newest features, and I'm wondering if there are better ActivityPub platforms that are developed with a coherent design philosophy.

There is a ton with broader features, but design isn't one of them. I'm using #Hubzilla AP is an addon here. Good enough for me, and i can touch CSS to design my own page.

@dynamic Nomadic identity, and most of everything else. I do miss some of Mastodon, but you can't have it all.

@dynamic That @jrp has noted AP is an add on is worth paying attention to. What that means in practice is that you can't rely on your messages sent to people you know on AP being delivered. I tried Hubzilla for a while and ran into so many problems I came back to Mastodon. If you want a website with some visibility access controls, perhaps have more of your social graph on Hubzilla and see AP as a nice to have it might work for you. Account mirroring is very nice, but doesn't play well with AP.

@jrp Hubzilla talks to Hubzilla using Zot. It talks to most of the rest of the Fediverse using AP and may have some other things going on as well. I don't think I'm confusing programs with protocols, but if I am it would be helpful to learn what I've missed.
