Every year on the third Sunday of October, the Matsuri festival of Nakayamadaiko, dedicated to the deity of Kushihara in Ena, is held in the city of Ena at the Nakayama Shrine. It is believed that the festival originated as a celebration of a good harvest or a prayer for rain. In contrast, a local legend states that the festival began in 1575 when Kushihara troops intercepted an invasion of Takeda Katsuyori's army in Mino, beating a large #
drum with their fists to raise morale in battle until the drum broke.
The custom consists of several parts: First in the morning, horses are greeted, flower arrangements are made and the horses are decorated with them. Then the priest and the master of ceremonies pray on the mountain, after which a procession starts to the shrine, where everybody then compete together in the so-called uchibayashi. At midnight the Shinto ritual takes place, which is concluded with three rounds around the shrine grounds in a prescribed order. After the last ritual, the groups disband naturally.
The musical instruments are one nagadō-daiko, two tsuke-shime-daiko, and several shinobue in each group. Most parts of the custom are performed by one person at the nagadō-daiko, while shinbayashi and uchikomi are performed carousel-like by the entire group. The more people who participate, the more fun it is. In the workshop we learn the shinbayashi part. We will learn the structure, the Kakegoe interjections, the choreography and the rhythm played on the nagadō-daiko. The fist-shaped bachi with their special shape remind us of the fists from the legend and will be provided in the workshop.
