I just received a private message from Mastodon, but since it was a reply to a public conversation, it was appended to the public conversation. I don't mind that part, but there is one problem with this implementation: you cannot reply privately to their direct message. You can only reply publicly.

Apparently a direct message from Mastodon can be a DM and a reply to something at the same time. Which makes sense, since they don't understand threaded conversations. But it causes a problem on our end.

There needs to be some way where we can reply privately to their DM, even if their DM is a reply to a public conversation.

I struggle with this since 2 years. The only option you probably have atm is to continue the private conversation in a separate thread, which you will have to start. I usually do this including a short explanation, why i have to do this to keep the conversation private. Most Mastodon users don't mind to learn - yet obviously it gets more tedious like this and conversations break.

How did you learn that it was sent as a PM? Did the sender tell you so? Or was there a lock symbol (the GUI indicator for PMs)?
I‘m curious because I‘m not aware of having ever received such a „private“ comment to a public post.

@Ema エマ There's an envelope/lock symbol to that comment in that case. Do you have Mastodon friends? Ask them to send you a PM in a comment to a public thread. They can. We can not :)

It would have an envelope next to it, and also there would be a Direct Message notification. When you click on the notification, it takes you to the public thread with the DM as a comment.
