I don't know if he was just intrigued by my backpack, or if he thought he'd find something to eat in it.

Wow, very nice catch.
Sadly they are
extincted
in Germany. So did you shoot this at the Atlantic coast?

If I click on the images to hopefully see a bigger version of the picture, I get a welcome message from OpenWebAuth and a message that the channel is not available. This is the link,

May I ask, which rather portable camera & lens you prefer to always have with you?

When it comes to photographing birds or moving animals, you really don't have much of a choice. You need an SLR with a telephoto lens. For landscapes or architecture, I think a smartphone is often enough. Depending on what I intend to do with my outing, I may or may not take my reflex.
That said, for better advice, @

are more competent than me.

I us an older Canon D50 DSLR with a mediocre 70-300 lens. But the images are great. What's your models of trust? That Canon is already heavy.

An affordable, sharp, small, robust and lightweight lens is the Tamron SP 500mm f8 Reflex lens, see for example
https://nigelborrington.com/2017/07/21/tamron-sp-500mm-f8-reflex-lens-a-review-of-mirror-lenses/
Two years ago I bought one for aprox 100 Euros. I would advise you to use it on a camera with IBIS (in body image stabilization). The image attached shows a handheld picture taken with a Canon R6 at 1/1000 on a foggy dark day some days ago.
Despite I have the possibility to use a
Canon RF100-500mm
with a decent auto focus on the R6, I love to shot with the old 500mm reflex lens from time to time. The looks and aesthetics of the pictures are special, by far not every shoot is perfect, it is easy to carry around with you.
My summary of the Tamron 500mm
Pros
small
lightweight
robust
sharp (if shake is not present)
low cost
does not attract so much attention as a usual 500mm (with is super big compared to the reflex mirror)
Cons
no auto focus (if available on your camera: use the auto focus peaking that helps you to find the focus)
no image stabilization (if available use a camera with IBIS and shoot with a fast shutter speed)

Echte Wunderwerke!
