Steamboat Willie is now public domain.
But - if the only archives are h264 videos, it would be a shame. I want lossless frame by frame high quality stills!

Now I can actually recreate this using an outdated version of Macromedia Flash.
Of course it has to be colorized.

Even though that's the exact year it got shut down, its products didn't get renamed to Adobe products until about 2007 or something. Also, those old versions were still used for an additional few years even after that point anyway.

Right. I was a Flash programmer at the time. I do miss some of Flash's errors sometimes, for they were perfect for #

I miss the days of old Newgrounds content (and maybe old YouTube as well).
Isn't it so sad to see both platforms (especially the latter) become victims of enshittification?

Phew. No. That's just the normal course of things. Doesn't bother me. Living and thriving worked without any communication tech already, so loosing it seems not a much of a loss.

New grounds is still alive and well, and hasn't changed much from when I was active in 2008 or so.
Plus with RuffleJS now being Actionscript2 and Actionscript3 compliant, all the old stuff is still available

What's kind of funny is that the title "Steamboat Willie" for Disney's first Mickey Mouse film is an obvious near copy of the title of a Buster Keaton movie, "Steamboat Bill Jr." that was shown a year or so earlier. The effort Disney went to to protect their copyright might seem to be a bit hypocritical after that!

I now tested ruffleJS myself. It does mostly work, however Flash players in 2004 had a display bug, which could be exploited to generate pixel graphics although Flash is vector based. Unfortunately ruffleJS didn't copy the bug :) eh eh .

I can show it to you instantly, if you have an old computer with a 2001 to 2004 flash player installed. I still have my old swf exploiting that bug at the time.

The source has no other relevant info for you. But pixelation worked like this: A colored background layer is covered by a differently colored front layer - both full size.
Now you take f.i. a text layer with just one word (say "HELLO"), set its opacity to zero.
Then start a loop copying the text layer randomly speading copies all over your layer.
If the text was intransparent you would see the screen quickly filling up with hellos, simply overlaying your front color with a cloud of hellos.
However with text fully or near transparent pixelation occurred by the back colored layer breaking through the front colored layer anywhere at least nine text objects overlaid each other fully or in parts.
Here's a visualization i did in a newer Photoshop just now, using the word HELLO. Front color Black, back color white, the pixeled overlays are clearly visible, but should be plain white in fact.

That is incredibly interesting! So it's mostly an artefact on the Max number of overlapping opacities, right? I wonder if SVG has such a limitation... I may have to do some experiments in different browsers
