I don't know if he was just intrigued by my backpack, or if he thought he'd find something to eat in it.

Wow, very nice catch.
Sadly they are
extincted
in Germany. So did you shoot this at the Atlantic coast?

If I click on the images to hopefully see a bigger version of the picture, I get a welcome message from OpenWebAuth and a message that the channel is not available. This is the link,

Oops, it's a streams bug. The link ought to include the channel. This works:

Wait, that's not right either. Image links used to include
.well-known/apgateway/did:key:...
instead of a channel name. This will take some research.

May I ask, which rather portable camera & lens you prefer to always have with you?

Yes, the Turnstone must be very rare in Germany. In fact, the bird nests mainly in Greenland, Spitsbergen, Norway, Denmark and Ellesmere Island in the Arctic Ocean. However, they can only be seen in Germany during a short period of migration in July and August, when they stop over before heading south.
The photos were taken yesterday south of Brittany.

When it comes to photographing birds or moving animals, you really don't have much of a choice. You need an SLR with a telephoto lens. For landscapes or architecture, I think a smartphone is often enough. Depending on what I intend to do with my outing, I may or may not take my reflex.
That said, for better advice, @
Waitman Gobble
and @
Tanja
are more competent than me.

I us an older Canon D50 DSLR with a mediocre 70-300 lens. But the images are great. What's your models of trust? That Canon is already heavy.

Mine is a modest EOS 550D with a 55-250 lens, all under 850 grams. It's still a bit heavy, but a lot less than yours, I imagine. As I do a lot of walking, i can't afford a heavier camera. Besides, photography is not a priority in birding for me.
